Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common intestinal disease today. Symptoms of this disease include abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, back pain, joint pain, headaches... there are some foods to avoid when suffering from this disease.
1. Spicy foods :
Curries and other spicy foods increase intestinal activity above normal levels. This increases the risk of symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
2. Fat:
Foods high in fat cause the intestines to contract more than usual, which can cause abdominal cramps. People with IBS should avoid or eat saturated fats from animal sources, and instead use products containing monounsaturated fats (such as olive oil) or polyunsaturated fats (such as sunflower oil) in their diet. Foods to avoid for IBS patients include processed meats (such as sausages, pâté), fatty snacks (cookies, nuts) and mayonnaise.
3. Sugar and sugar substitutes:
Fructose, the building block of sugar, is harder for people with IBS to digest. Constipation, diarrhea, and bloating are all caused by sugar in the diet. Sugar substitutes like sorbitol have the same effect. Foods to avoid with IBS include jams, syrups, candy, and sugary fruit juices.
4. Dairy products :
People with IBS and lactose intolerance have difficulty digesting some dairy products. Milk, ice cream, and ice cream contain natural sugars that, when digested, can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and constipation. Cheese and yogurt do not cause these symptoms. If you are lactose intolerant, it is best to reduce the amount of dairy products in your diet and consult your doctor.
5. Vegetables:
While a healthy, balanced diet is recommended, some vegetables can cause bloating, a common symptom during IBS flare-ups. You may experience abdominal cramps from bloating caused by broccoli, cabbage, and onions.
6. Wheat:
Bread, cereals, and wheat products can trigger IBS. They can worsen any symptoms you are already experiencing.
7. Acidic fruits:
Lemons, oranges, grapefruits, and other fruits high in acid can cause or worsen IBS symptoms.
8. Alcohol:
For some people with IBS, alcohol is a no-no. Alcohol irritates the lining of the gut, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain.
9. Coffee:
Often causing problems for people with IBS, it irritates the intestines causing diarrhea and abdominal cramps.
10. The “grand” meal:
Large meals are often difficult to digest and in people with IBS they can overload the digestive system, leading to cramps and diarrhoea. IBS patients are advised to eat smaller meals and can eat 5-6 times a day.
